Statistics & Methodology

I estimate that there is the potential for a website to receive over 3,000 visitors per month from these phrases. That is, if a website could be number one for all phrases they would receive an estimated 3K of visitors a month.

I used Google to search on each of the above phrases and gathered the first 100 websites that came up in the results.

I then rated each website based on its position in the search results (See my Search Result Parser). This knowledge was combined with the number of times a particular search was performed each month to come up with an overall performance score for each website in this market.

Performance scores also take into account the multiple types of search result entries, such as places listings, videos and news.

Over 700 websites were discovered during this study. The following tool includes them all.

I have analysed over 1,000 search phrases related to website design & development in Australia. I determined the websites that were performing best in the search results for those phrases using my Search Result Parser, data on search volumes from Google AdWords and some proprietary formulas to determine the value of a search result position from that data.

Tested Search Phrases

Over a thousand search phrases were analysed covering the most popular searches related to website businesses in Australia. Each phrase was weighted according to how relevant it was to the subject matter. For example "website design company Sydney" has a higher weighting than "web design tutorial". Google's Keyword Tool estimates that these phrases are used around 50 Million times per month!

A search was made on each chosen phrase and the top 100 websites were gathered. Then each website earned points based on their position in search results (See my Search Result Parser), the phrases weighting and how frequently the phases is used in searches. So the top websites are the ones which frequently showed up in the popular and relevant search results.

Introduction

In 2012 I will make a conference presentation to around 30 Australian SMBs in relation to Online Marketing. This page is here to provide further information to the people who attended.

Here are the slides for the presentation. There are bonus slides at the end for the Q&A session. Afterwards I have included some supporting information. If you have any questions then you can contact me directly or add a comment at the end of this article.

Google Keyword Tool

Google's Keyword Tool is a good way to research about what people are looking for. It can provide rough search volume estimates as well as suggest extra keywords for you to consider. A starting point is to enter in your websites domain name and let Google work things out from there.

Website Systems

Ready made Content Management Systems (CMS) can save you a lot of money and time. Often they will be more robust and feature rich than a more expensive custom made website.

If you don't need a fancy shopping system then WordPress is a great option. It's free, has lots of features and has a massive support base. Some may personally take on the task, but in most cases you will probably want to hire a designer to set-up the website. After that you can edit the content yourself via its admin interface, which is one of the easiest to use on the market. It is capable of supporting shopping systems but I would recommend using a system specifically designed for eCommerce instead. Due to it's deserved popularity it has become a target for hackers, so it is extremely important that you keep a WordPress website up-to-date. (Bonus: How to quickly SEO WordPress ).

There are many dedicated eCommerce systems out there with great features to help you sell your products.

A very popular one is Magento . It's extremely powerful and is backed by a large network of developers. Setting up a Magento system would take some development work, but you should end up with a powerful system that you have full control over.

Another approach popular with my clients is to used hosted solutions like BigCommerce (Affiliate link. I am a registered partner). These eCommerce systems are easier to setup as you only need a designer to create the look of the website. All other functionality and features are built in to the system and controllable via your administration interface. The down side is that you and your developer have limited ways to enhance the system beyond what it can already do. If it already has every feature you want then this can be a quick and relatively cheap way to get yourself up and running. Being hosted means you don't have to manage and pay for your own hosting. You can literally have a shopping website up and running in minutes!

Monitoring

With Google Analytics you can see what visitors you are getting, and what they are up to. This can be a great source of information to help you find out what is working, and what isn't.

Registering your website with Google Webmaster Tools is a must in my opinion. Here you get some Google insider information about your website including where Google has issues.

Google Places

Google Places entries sometimes show up when people make local searches like Adelaide Gold Detectors. They are the entries with the tags, addresses and map markers.

Google Places is free. If you have a business name, address and phone number then there is no reason not to claim your place.

Shopping

Google sometimes shows products in its search results or adverts. This is via their Shopping system which is run from the Google Merchant Centre . You can add your own products via this interface and a correctly formatted product feed. It's a bit fussy and you need to enter in some specific product details such as price, brand and barcode before you will show up in the search results. Some CMSs like BigCommerce support the creation of the product feed for you.

Tools

I have personally written some tools and articles to help both business owners and website developers learn how to promote a website. Ones motioned in the presentation:

For those wanting to go that extra step. here are some more advanced tools that I use myself (Note: these include affiliate links, I may get a commission if you buy!).

SEOmoz is a great resource for SEO guides, community support and data research. Their pro membership also provides you with easy to use tools to analyse and optimise your website.

Raven SEO Tools is more suitable for an SEO consultant like me. It provides access to a lot of data as well as a system to help run and manage campaigns such as link building and social media.

HootSuite is a very popular social media management tool. The free account is enough to help a small business schedule their posts and track interactions. The paid version lets you add a lot more accounts making it suitable for professional social media activities.

How to make a Google map and add it to your website using My Places Maps

Using Google Maps and Google Places

Google has its own map making system that is available to all. It's not that hard to use and it lets you create some great maps.

These maps can then be easily embedded into to your website to help you show your potential customers that you are a real business and where you are based.

As a bonus these maps are indexed in Google's Search Engine so will also directly promote your business and Google Places entry.

How To Do It

Before you start you will need a Google Account. You may already have one for GMail, Google+, Google Analytics? If not, you can got Google and Create a New Account .

Log into your account then go to Google Maps . Here you can search Google Maps for places and businesses. You can also check out your personal map related stuff in My Places.

Click on the My Places button and you will see a big red Create Map. Guess what, I want you to click on that as well.

Provide a title and a short description for the map. Use your business name and describe what your business does. When finished click the Done button

Now we want to add your business into the map. If you have already registered your business with Google Places then I suggest you search for it using the top search box. When you find it you can click on the little button next to your business name and select Save to Map. Make sure your map is selected and click Save. Now go back to your map and you should see that your business has been added to it.

If you don't have a Google Places entry you will need to add your business manually. From your map editor, first find on the map where your business should be. Then click on the blue marker at the top right of the map (If you can't see it, check that you're in edit mode). You should then be able to place the marker where you want your business to be. Click again to add the marker to the map.

Now we want to enhance your business. In edit mode click on the marker for your business. This should open up a bubble to let you edit the details for it. Fill in your business name and a short description. You can even switch to Rich Text editing and add a link back to your website. Don't forget to click on the icon as well, you can change this to an image that suits your business better.

There's lots of things you can add to your map. Have a look at my example just above. Once your happy with your map, make sure you save it. Now your ready to embed it into your website.

Embedding is quite easy. Click on the link icon to the top left of the page. You will be given a few options on how to share your map. I suggest you select the link at the bottom called Customize and preview embedded map. Here you can play around with your map until you have it how you want it to look when it's embedded. Then just copy the supplied code into your website (you may need to give it to your website developer) and voila, you have a fancy map.

A backlink tool comparison based on results

There was a big panic in the SEO world when Yahoo announced at the end of 2011 that they were going to discontinue their Yahoo Site Explorer. Where would all these SEOs get their data for those monthly reports!

I was more relaxed because I've been using several backlink tools for a long time. I believe the more sources I use, the more complete my data is. And as it turns out, it's also good risk management. I did not panic, but it did make me re-look at my software.

I have my own tool that pulls in backlink data from several backlink sources. I though this would be a great opportunity to use it to generate some tool comparison data. So, I enhanced it to support a few more sources and to generate reports for this article.

My tool also tries to validate every discovered link by crawling the backlinking pages and checking if there is still a link on them. So this report not only compares how big an index a tool might have, but also how accurate it is.

The Contenders

Here are the backlink tools that were included in the analysis. As you can see I managed to gather data before Yahoo shut up shop, so we can see how important it was (or not).

I have categorised each tool as Public (anyone can gather data for a domain), Private (only for webmasters of a domain) and Paid (you pay to get data for a domain).

Majestic SEO provides it's data for webmasters but also offers paid access to other peoples domains. It is also the source of data for Raven SEO Tools. As I did not get a complete set of data for Majestic SEO I have decided to exclude it from the stats. From the data that was gathered it seemed that Raven would sometimes return only 10% of the data provided by Majestic SEO (Historic), indicating that Majestic SEO may be a far more complete source.

The Targets

I gathered data from 11 websites of varying size. While a few websites exceeded Google's 10,000 backlink limit most had less than 500 backlinks. In no way is this a large data set to provide conclusive evidence, but it is enough to see patterns.

About 130,000 backlinks were found covering 8,000 domains. Of those I managed to validate about 60% of the backlinks.

To analysing the data...

Top Backlink Page Finder

Raven SEO Tools scores very well here however in reality Google Webmaster Tools generally scores better. Raven won this race Because of the 10,000 limit in Google Webmaster Tools. To highlight the effect, the following graph excludes the larger websites.

Top Backlink Pages for Smaller Websites

This means Google Webmaster Tools is great for domains with less than 10,000 backlinks. Any more and Raven SEO Tools starts to shine.

I've been sampling the 10,000 limited Google Webmaster Tools data for a while and something I noticed is that Google periodically rotates the data it returns. Maybe every week or so. This means that the sample set can get more complete over time.

For the public options Yahoo Site Explorer was the best source. You people not prepared to pay will miss it. It actually did better on the smaller websites dues it's 1,000 link limit that restricted it's performance for the larger websites.

The Most Backlink Domains Found

Google Webmaster Tools came out strong here even with its 10k limit. The reason for this is Google tends to provide its sample from across all the domains. So the domain count remains high but the number of backlinks per domain drops.

SEOmoz performed stronger at the domain level and almost equalled Yahoo Site Explorer.

Validating Backlink Pages

Here I have limited the data to just include the pages I managed to validate (a hunt for a direct link in the page). It seems to show that Google's index is more accurate than Ravens and as expected Ravens Fresh data was more accurate than the Historic data. Here Google steamed ahead in the race, even with its 10k limit.

Public, Paid, Private

If you're the webmaster with Private access then about 24% of the links are only available to you. This is mainly due to Google Webmaster Tools.

If you only have Public access then you will only see about 2% of all the links. This was about 4% when Yahoo Site Explorer was working. Quite a loss for those relying on public access alone. Yahoo Site Explorer was the only source for 1% of the links.

This leaves us with Paid access which can get you 73% of the links found. That's a good chunk of data for your money.

Other Tools

I had a look at quite a few other tools. Here are the main ones and why I did not include them in the analysis:

Blekko was excluded because there was no way to expert the data.

SEOMoz Pro was excluded because I didn't pay for it :-O Non of the tested domains reached 1,000 backlinks which may mean that the Pro would have not made any difference.

SEO Spy Glass provides 1,100 links for free. From a basic test the results looked very similar to Yahoo Site Explorer or SEOmoz Open Site Explorer.

Back Link Watch does not provide a download option so was not tested. Result counts looked similar to Yahoo Site Explorer.

aHrefs looks like it has similar data levels to Majestic SEO Fresh but they state they do their own crawling. Only limited data is provided for free.

Traffic Travis just used public Google and Yahoo search results. So not really a player.

Market Samurai now uses Majestic SEO (fresh or historic). I think you have to pay Majestic SEO for it to work.

SEO Profiler requires payment but sample data showed potential.

Conclusions

If you are the webmaster then it's a no brainer to register your website with Google Webmaster Tools to get around 75% of the available link data. While your at it, register with Majestic SEO and Bing.

If your not a webmaster or want to get closer to 100% then you really need to pay. Majestic SEO is the main source I tested. If you access Majestic SEO data via other tools like Raven SEO Tools you may find you see less links, but still a lot!

Otherwise, SEOmoz and Open Site Explorer is your best free option.

Don't sweat the loss of Yahoo Site Explorer. It only provided 1% of unique data.

How to add users to your websites Google Analytics account

Friends, developers, SEO companies or SEO consultants may want to see how well your website is performing. This is how you give them access to your Google Analytics account.

Make sure they have a Google User Account

A user in Google Analytics is based on a Google Account Users login name, which is their email address.

They may already have one for gMail or another one of Google's services. If not, they can create a new account here:

https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount

It's quite a simple form. All they really need is an email address.

Have them send you their chosen email address once they have it.

Adding the User

Once you have their email address you can login to Google Analytics and add them as a user:

Go to your Settings page in Google Analytics (login if required)
You may have to then choose the account you wish to add the new users to.
Then click on the Users Tab

This will show all the users currently assigned to this account. To add a new one, click on the Add User link at the top right of the list.

Here you will need to enter the users email address (as determined earlier).

There are two access types. View Reports only is the standard type, and only lets users view the profiles you select for them. If you select this, then make sure you add the profiles you wish them to be able to see. This would normally be the only one.

The other access type is Account Administrator. Selecting this will give them all the control that you have. They can see and configure all the profiles, add users etc.

Once you have filled the form in, click Save Changes. At this point they will be sent an email confirming their new access rights.

How to create a Great Email Signature for your Business

Email Signature Tips

Make it easy for people to contact you and find your services by creating a great email signature. Here are some tips:

Use 2 hyphens and a space (-- ) as the first line of your signature. It's the official way to indicate the start of a signature
Make sure it's in plain text so people can copy/paste it
Keep it as short as possible, say less than 10 lines
Don't exceed 70 characters per line
Include your full name
Include your position
Include your business name
Include important phone numbers
Include your websites address and make it a link
Include a small logo or even photo of you. Keep it smaller than 100x100 and make sure you specify its width and height in the html
Reference images from somewhere on the internet so others can see them. E.g. on your website.
Don't include personal stuff like your own website. Keep a separate signature for that
You don't need to include your email address. That's already in the from field
Only add a legal disclaimer if required
Only include your business address if you have walk in customers
Don't add quotes or personal comments as they make a signature large and may offend

Email Signature Ideas

And some ideas on how to further enhance your signature...

Use your business colours and font
Include links to other networks such as LinkedIn, Facebook Fan Page and Twitter accounts
Link to a vCard file (don't attach one) which can be used to quickly add you to their address book
Add some sales pitch, like a link to a new offer or service
Encourage clients to write a review or testimonial about you
Add certification images

It's best to use a branded email address if possible. E.g. use your websites domains based email account over your ISP (@bigpond.com.au) or web (@hotmail.com) addresses. It's more professional and invokes trust.

I have several signatures for different uses. E.g. personal, business, replies, promotions. Make your signatures suite the moment. My reply signature is shorter than my main signature so I don't clog up long conversations with long signatures.

Your domain name is one of the first decisions you make when creating a website. And a hard one to change! Here are some tips to help you make the right choice and get the best domain name for your business website.

The advice is primarily targeted at small businesses in Australia.

To some administrative advice first. How to find, buy and host your new website...

Domain Name Search

When working out your domain name you need to be able to quickly check if it is available. There are many websites that provide this service such as Domain Central where this and all my Australian domains are registered.

Once you have made your decision, it is probably simplest to purchase your domain at the same place you get your hosting.

Hosting

You will need somewhere to place your website. This is where Hosting comes in.

Digital Pacific is a good ECO friendly Australian option. Their servers are in Australia so have a natural speed advantage and they also sell .com.au domains.

This website is hosted by ASP Web Hosting which is also an Australian hosting company. They specialise in ASP.Net hosting, the language this website is written in.

Often people buy hosting from America where it is cheaper, however this cheap hosting may leave you with a slower website and less support. They also can't sell you your .com.au domain. Host Gator is very cheap and seem to have a good reputation. GoDaddy is also very cheap however they seem to have a bad reputation among some webmaster.

If you're looking to create a full blown shopping cart then you may want to consider Big Commerce for your hosting and Content Management System (CMS). I find it one of the best shopping cart systems around so have become a partner and active member of their community. Several of my clients are using the system and have found it very powerful.

I also have a few websites in the UK. I'm currently using Pipe Ten who are from my home town, so they have to be good. I have also used eUKHost in the past and found their services fine.

Onto the domain name tips...

You only Need One

I often see people buying up lots of domains thinking it will help them do well with search engines. This is not the case!

If you have multiple domains, the only way they can help with search engines is if they each relate to their own unique website. Pointing a lot of domains to the same website adds no value as the search engines just flag them as duplicates and ignore all but the one they deem to be the original.

A common tactic is to buy what is called exact match domains. That is, domain names that exactly match a set of searched for keywords. From experience this technique does work (even though Google have repeatedly said they are working on minimising its effect). Each exact match domain tends to host a very simple website that contains content that also targets the chosen keywords.

There are sometimes other reasons to acquire multiple domains such as stopping your competition from using them or when going international.

Deciding on your preferred Top Level Domain (TLD)

The TLD of a domain is the end part of a domain name that indicates the category the website is in and sometimes the country.

For an Australian business I would recommend they use .com.au or .com. If the business is not international then the .com.au may be better as it reinforces the fact the business and website are from Australia.

If you have trouble getting those TLDs then you can opt for something like .net. The minor downside is that people tend to still type in .com and may end up with your competitor!

be careful if you decide to use US hosting and a .com domain. Search Engines will assume your website is American and not Australian. This may effect how well you do in the search results.

Keep it Short

Long domain names can be hard to remember and even harder to type in correctly. So keep it short.

I would recommend trying to keeping it down to 24 characters or less. This is partially because this is the limit that Google AdWords has when adding Mobile Ads.

Brand your domain - Use you Business Name

The best domain name is one that reflects the name of the business. It helps brand awareness and creates a professional image. Remember that your domain name should also be setup as your email address, placed on business cards and used in advertising.

What would a client try if they had to guess what your domain was? That will be the best possible domain to get.

Think of different ways you can write your business name. E.g abbreviated forms like IBM.com.

Consider Keywords

Words used in your domain name can boost your relevance in search results. If you have done some Keyword Research you should know which words can help you the most.

It's great if your business name contains those keywords. If not, and your business name is not too long, consider adding a keyword to the end. E.g. IBMComputers.com

If you are not worried about branding, then you may want to use the best keywords in your domain name. Look at mine ;-)

If its hard to get the domain you want, consider adding dashes/hyphens between the words. My domain is a good example of that: seo-website-designer.com

Try and avoid the hyphen option if possible. People tend to forget it and its hard to explain. On a plus side they do remove ambiguity about what the domain name means.

Do they get it?

Consider the scenario where you tell someone your domain name, or you use it in a radio advert. Will the recipient be able to remember it and type it in correctly?

Is it easy to spell? Some businesses register multiple domains just to capture all the typos people can make!

Shorts

If your domain name is long and hard to enter then consider buying a short version of your domain and Redirecting it to your main domain. I have min.to/seo . This technique means the visitor still ends up on your real website, but only have to type in a small one.
(QRCode Tip: if you use QRCodes then this same trick can help you create codes that are easier to scan and track).

Is it Rude?

An example here will help. I'm a regular contributor to experts-exchange.com. A while back they added the hyphen to their domain after they realised how their old domain could be read: ExpertSexChange.com

So check that there are no alternate meanings to your domain!

Have your website Re-enforce your name

To help visitors remember your website and its domain name, make sure the website is also branded to re-enforce your chosen name. Try and use exactly the same name in the titles and headings of the website and your other forms of marketing.

Now go get it!

From the early days, Google's patented PageRank algorithm has been central in their formulas to determine who shows up in their search results.

Over the years the exact algorithm has evolved, however it is still based on the same premise to determine how important a website is, based on which other websites link to it.

The true PageRank score for a websites page is kept secret, however Google does periodically publish a score out of 10 for each page via its Toolbar . This is commonly called the Google Toolbar PageRank.

The Toolbar PageRank is rarely updated and only provides a very rough guide to what the true PageRank may be. Non the less, many people practicing Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) monitor it carefully. It can be a good indication that a website is moving in the right (or wrong) direction.

Note that PageRank is assigned to each page of a website. Many people consider the PageRank for the home page as the overall PageRank for the website.

Who owns your search results?

Google's search results have become a lot more complex. It's no longer a case of tracking how well your doing based on your organic position from 1 to 10. Now the results also contain ads, news, brand, stores, places, maps, product, videos and images. Each of these components steal space from the organic results and give websites alternate ways to become listed.

This tool will process the components in a particular search result and score the listed websites based on their chance on being clicked. The results let you judge how well websites are doing in a more realistic way.

How do I parse my search results?

Perform a search in Google and copy the source code from the search result page into the text box below. Then click Parse to see not only how each website performs but also a detailed list of the components on the page.

Note: If you are using Google Instant then Google does not update the code when a search is made directly from the Google search page. To get around this either switch off instant or make your searches from the toolbar.

Quite often I have to work with websites that have multiple versions of Google Analytics code embedded in them. Each tracking for a different account that was probably set-up by different people over the life time of the website.

Almost always, the code is a mess! Old code mixed with new to try and get around the multiple tracking issue.

It took me a while to find a clean solution, so I have decided to share it and hopefully save others time and frustration. I've also written a small script (see end) to make it even easier to track multiple profiles.

The Analytics Code

The only change to the original code is in bold. Just add those three lines for each additional account you need to track. The important thing is that you create a new namespace for each new tracker (highlighted in red).

And don't forget to use real account codes!

Tracking events and custom page hits

Like above, you would need to trigger the event or page hit for each tracker.

A custom page hit would look something like this

Automating it - A Solution

On larger websites it could be very complex to make sure the duplicate code is always implemented correctly, especially for events.

To help solve this I have written a little JavaScript file to automate the process.

Include File: WsaGa.js

The script lets you register all the profiles you wish to track, then provides functions to let you call the GA functions across all the profiles. Here's an example:

Control what Google displays

When Google shows your website pages in it's Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) it normally uses content from the page itself. The heading is taken from your pages title and the snippet is often taken from your pages meta description.

What if your page title or meta description is missing, poor or doesn't relate well to the search query? In these cases Google will find another source for the text to display. This maybe from page headings, visible content or even text in links pointing to the page (Link Text in Back Links).

Google will only display so much information. Around 70 characters for the heading and 2 lines for the snippet. This tool helps you see what your website may look like in Google Results, so you can fine tune it to look the most attractive to viewers.

If you want to test how an an existing page looks in Google's results, enter its URL then click Acquire Text.

You can then edit the title and description to see what it will look like in Google's Search Results. Click Generate to update the emulated results.

Google highlights words in the search results that match the words that were searched on. You can emulate this by adding words to the Search Word list. They should be space separated.

How to Correctly Redirect Visitors | 301 Permanent Redirects

The 301 Permanent Redirect

There are several cases where a web page or even whole website is moved to a new location.

Page Name Change
Website Upgrade
Domain Change or Consolidation

A common mistake is to just make the move without considering search engines and visitors experiences. This can lead to visitors experiencing broken links and search engines dropping their index for your pages.

To resolve this you should tell your visitors and the search engines where the page has moved to. And the best way to do this is via a mechanism called 301 Permanent Redirects. Browsers support this and seamlessly move the visitor to the new page. Search Engines respect it and transfer their index data to the new page.

There are several other redirect mechanisms available, however the 301 Redirect is the only one that Search Engines (in particular Google) state they support for updating their index.

How you perform 301 Redirects varies with the system you use and the nature of your problem. The rest of this article explains several of the different ways to implement 301 Permanent Redirecting.

You can use my Redirect Header Checker to confirm if you have setup redirects correctly and that they are really of the 301 type.

PHP in File 301 Redirect

If you're using PHP and your old page is a PHP page, you can change it's content to perform a redirect in the following way.

Apache .htaccess 301 Redirect

If you are running your website on an Apache server then you can use the .htaccess file to setup all your redirects. This is more manageable as you don't need to keep old files and it also works for any URL (not restricted to PHP files).

The method is based on editing a file called .htaccess which needs to be placed in the root of your website. This file is used for several purposes so make sure you use the existing one if it is already there.

Here is a example of a basic .htaccess file that does a few 301 Redirects

ASP in File 301 Redirect

If you're using ASP and your old page is an ASP page, you can change it's content to perform a redirect in the following way.

If you're using ASP.Net 3.5 or less and your old page is an ASP.Net page, you can add the following to the Page_Load method.

If you chose to instantly end the response (true) then the method will trigger a ThreadAbortException, so make sure your exception handling does not do strange things because if this.

IIS 7 Routing Module and web.config

In IIS 7 and .Net 3.5 the Routing Module was introduced (You may need to install and enable it). It lets application developers control URL rewriting and redirecting via code or even in the web.config file. Here's an example:

The same idea can be used to setup a redirection system without the need for pages to be present. This website uses Route Handlers and Http Handlers to process all requests including the handing of 301 redirects.

Zeus Server Scripts

If your php website is powered by a Zeus server then you can't use the .htaccess file. On Zeus you need to create a rewrite.script. Here's an example:

One way to provides visitors with a better experience is by providing them with a street map to help them find your business. This tool enables you to quickly add a map into your website, thus showing your customers where your business is located.

Before we start

This map making tool was originally made in 2009 and it still works!

Over the time Google has provided more tools at our disposal to create and use maps. Now, I would recommend people create their own maps with Google and embed those maps into their website. It's a bit more work than this tool, but you can create fancier maps, and they may also contribute towards promoting your website.

Who's Hijacking your Google Analytics Code? Why not find out!

What does this mean?

A question on Quora entitled "What happens if I put someone else's Google Analytics code on my website?" triggered a train of thought and investigation that made me discover things about how Google Analytics treats its Hostname Dimension, and because of that how you can discover which other domains are using your Google Analytics tracking code.

Is it possible?

The answer to the Quora question is that anyone can include your analytics code on their own website. They won't get any information from it, but they could confuse you.

If they put your code on their website, you will see their traffic as if it is yours, on top of your own websites data.

Can I find out who?

luckily, Google Analytics provides a Dimension (their term) so you can see the Hostname (domain) that causes any traffic. So if someone does, for some strange reason, want to add your Google Analytics code to their domain, you will known who they are. And can hunt them down!

Google Analytics also lets you create custom reports, so I created one that showed all the Hostnames that are causing visitors on the websites I manage, and I was surprised...

I didn't see malicious competitors causing most of the dodgy traffic, I saw major websites!

Why are the big boys involved?

The domains I picked up that triggered the most traffic tended to be translation websites (Google), caching websites (Google), social bookmarking websites (ShareThis) and URL shorteners (TinyUrl). This got me intrigued.

I could not work out why many of the Hostnames were showing up. There seemed to be no link between them and me!

After analysing these websites I noticed something in common, many of them use frames (spit) to embed peoples websites. You know the thing, A top bar to keep you on their website while they display yours.

This means your website is displayed, but within a frame of someone else's website. And your website triggers your tracking code.

What does this mean?

So I think the discovery here is, if your website is placed in a frame of another website, you get to track that via the Hostname Dimension in Google Analytics. I.e. You can see if other websites are displaying your website within theirs. Google Analytics must be tracking the Hostname of the top most frame.

You may be surprised how much traffic is due to this. On my small website 0.5% of traffic was given a different Hostname. For my international clients I'm seen figures up to 3% due to the translation websites.

It may be worth filtering out Hostnames in Google Analytics, or at least looking at them to see if anything fishy is going on.

Now to analysing all those other Hostnames to see why they are triggering traffic on my website!

How My Maps are influencing Google Places Snippets and Rankings

I believe I have found good evidence that referring to Places Pages within Google My Maps has an influence over how a places entry gets displayed in search results, and also the keywords it ranks for.

Like many things I discovered this by accident!

I like My Maps

I've been creating My Maps on Google's My Places for quite some time. Sometimes for fun, and sometimes to experiment.

The map which caused this discovery is called My Adelaide SEO Clients . I bet you can guess what I do and where I live ;-)

The map contains the places entries for some of my local clients...

This map was quite handy about a year ago when Google would refer to related maps in Places pages.
By including a Place on my map I could get that place page to link back to my map, and therefore my business. This no longer works

Notice the highlighted phrases SEO Adelaide and SEO and Web Promotion by Web Site Advantage. These are in the map title and in the text related to each place entry. I'd put them in deliberately to help cross promote my business.

You will see them again later!

What are my clients doing here?

So, like a good local SEO, I was checking what the local competition was like in Google Maps. To my surprise, my clients were competing in my industry!

This is page two of the maps search results for adelaide seo at the time of testing.

Notice how they all have snippets taken from my map, confirming there is a link between my map entries and the places pages.

Observation #1: It indicates you can influence what is displayed in a places entry via text you associate with that place in a map.

My clients have nothing to do with SEO?

To avoid the personalisation of results, all tests were done using a separate chrome profile in incognito mode.

It's true. Most of those clients don't link back to my website and they don't use the term SEO in their website or Places entry. They would not have any SEO related backlinks apart from the odd link from my website, which would not be using SEO in the link text.

Observation #2:The only reason they are showing up for adelaide seo searches is because of their association to my map and its title.

If I search on the exact title My Adelaide SEO Clients then they dominate the first page. They also do well if I search using the text related to each place: SEO and Web Promotion by Web Site Advantage.

To me this is a very strong indication that the text in my maps can influence what terms a Places Page shows up in. The title of the map seems to have the most influence.

What's the benefit?

In my case nothing much! I guess my clients are pushing my competition out of the results and I'm getting a mention in their snippets.

But with this knowledge, you can help a places page perform in the keywords you want, and potentially control the text in the snippets.

It may even help them rank better!

Things that are fresh, but don't last

When I made this website I made a decision that it wouldn't be a blog. The website is about evergreen content that I constantly update to help website developers and keen business owners improve how they work on the internet. I want this website to be a great place to refer to and trust. I want people to believe it is telling them the latest techniques and tactics to help your website perform.

I see a lot of outdated SEO material on the web. It misguides people and can even harm a website and worse a business. Blogging proliferates this because authors don't correct or update their old material. they just write a new blog to get themselves fresh viewers and more content. This is not in the interest of people wanting to learn what is correct.

I'm glad I made that decision and I still stand by it. My main focus is to provide advice and tools that solve today's problems, and not leave old rubbish sitting around.

Recently I felt I had a few things to say that doesn't fit the evergreen mould. Stuff that IS about NOW and what is happening TODAY. So I've decided to add a blog to my website!!!!

It does not take long before a website becomes big enough that visitors have trouble finding what they want. If they can't find it, they often move on, resulting in your loss. Something you want to avoid.

A great way to resolve this is to add a search box into your website. This way visitors can quickly find out if you have the information they are looking for.

Some Website Builders and Content Management Systems (CMS) have options to add a search box, but in many cases it requires in-depth knowledge of website development and databases to implement a system that works well.

This is where Google's Custom Search comes in. It's relatively simple to embed into a website and brings with it Google's own powerful search algorithms. No need to learn about databases and advanced SQL commands here!

There are some caveats though. You are dependent on how well Google has indexed your website. This can mean search results may miss out some pages or be based on old content. Also, Google includes adverts in the search results, which can cause visitors to leave your website. On the plus side, you can make a little money from those adverts!

The rest of this article will take you through the basic steps to embed Google Custom Search into your website:

Sign in to Google

Before you can create a Google Custom Search you need to have a Google Account. You may already have one for Gmail, Google+ or another one of Google's services.

If you have an AdSense account then it would be best to use that. You can then associate your Google Custom Search with your AdSense account to get paid from the adverts in the search results.

If you don't have an account yet, you can create a new one here:

It's quite a simple form. All your really need is an email address. Don't forget to note down the email address and password you used!

Create your Custom Search Engine

Once you have signed into your Google Account you can start to create a Custom Search Engine by going to the Google Custom Search page.

Just click on the New Search Engine... link to get started.

Fill in details requested. In particular the sites you want it to search through. Then click Next.

Here you need to chose a Style. Don't worry to much now, as you can always change it later. If you are CSS savvy you can customise it as well. Click on a Style to see a preview of it, which you can actually test to see if what sort of results Google will display. Once you have chosen your theme then click Next.

The Search Code

By default Google provides code that you can use to add to a dedicated search page. This is the simplest option. With this you create a new page on your website and add the provided code into it. You can then add "search" links to it from the other pages of your website, and your done. Visitors have to go to the search page (via those links) in order to perform a search.

If you wish to have a more integrate search where search boxes are embedded on every page, then click on the Look and feel link near the top...

Embedded Search Boxes (look and feel)

There are several Look and feel Layout options that you can use to change the way the Google Search Engine works. The default is Full-width which lets you display the search results on the same page as the search box.

My favourite is the Two page option, which is what is used on this website (see top right). This option lets you embed a search box on every page. When a visitor searches using it they are sent to a dedicated search page to see the results.

It even suggests refinements to your search as you type.

To use the Two page option, go to the Look and feel section and select Two page as your layout. Then click the Save & Get Code... button. Here you will need to enter the URL of the page you are going to use to display the search results. Create that search result page and embed the provided Search results code into it. Finally add the Search Box Code to all the pages on your website (a good place would be in a common header if your website is template driven).

Extra Options

There are many other options available from the sections listed on the left hand side. I will highlight some of the more useful ones:

Preview searches

The Preview option lets you try out the custom search to see if it meets your requirements

Do you have an XML SiteMap?

If you do. first verify it with Google Webmaster Tools , then add it to your Custom Search via the Indexing option.

Want to make money?

If you wan't to get some pocket money from the adverts Google shows in the search results then you can set this up in the Make money section. It requires you to have a Google AdSense account.

Improving the results

Google often uses your pages titles and description to explain your pages in these results, so what they say is important in helping the searcher make a decision. I've written some articles to help you edit and improve both your Title Tag and your Meta Description.

Quickly build your .htaccess file

An .htaccess file is a file on Apache servers used for several things including controlling how different URLs are processed. One common use is when a website is re-written and you want to forward all the users visiting your old pages to the new ones.

Not using Apache?
Then check out my article on how to do 301 redirects, which covers examples for other servers and languages.

In the .htaccess file, this is done by adding RewriteRules that cause 301 Redirects from one page to another. The 301 Permanent Redirect is the best way to perform forwarding as it also tells the Search Engines to update their indexes.

Manually creating these RewriteRules can be time consuming and error prone. This tool will generate the rules for you.

Enter a comma or tab separated lists of old to new pages then click the generate button. Copy the resulting code into your .htaccess file then see if the pages are redirecting as expected.

I find the simplest way to do this is to create an Excel file with two columns. Place the old pages in the first column and the new pages in the second column. Then just copy and paste the cells into the form below.

You only need to enter the path for each page and not the whole URL. e.g. about-us.htm. Just using paths means the rules generated are domain name independent. If you enter the full URL then the code generated will also take the domain into account. This way you can have the rule only apply to a single domain or have the redirect switch to a different domain.

An example list may look like this:

index.php?page=45, contact-us/

        about-us.htm, about-us/

        product-details.php?id=345, product/345/?view=details

Here's an overview on what it does

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain\.com$ [NC]

For each rule there may be conditions that must be met before a rewrite rule is considered. These Rewrite Conditions are added using the RewriteCond command. The above one is used if the old path included a specific domain (HTTP_HOST) to use.

RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^querystringtext$

Dynamic URLs contain querystring parameters after a question mark (?). These have to be specified as a rewrite condition (QUERY_STRING). If no querystring is used then a blank rewrite condition is added to make sure it only matches URLs without query strings.The condition is written using Regular Expression (Regex) syntax.

RewriteCond %{HTTPS} =on

Some Regex Basics

^	The start of a string
$	The end of a string
\.	Dots need escaping with a slash as they have a meaning (any character)
\+	Plus needs escaping with a slash as it means "one or more" of the previous character

The above rewrite condition is added if the old path specifically used https:// in its URL, thus stating it's secure.

RewriteRule ^about-us\.htm$ /about-us/? [R=301,NE,NC,L]

Then the actual RewriteRule. This first states the path that must be matched for the rewrite rule to be used (once all the previous rewrite conditions are met). This is in a Regular Expression (Regex) syntax.

The generator creates a Regex string that enforces an exact match with the supplied path.

Next we add the page we are Permanently Redirecting to. This may be a relative path or a complete URL, depending on the format used in the original list. If the URL does not contain a question mark (?) then one is added. This is a signal to stop the querystring from the old page being added.

Finally a set of flags are included to define how the rewrite rule works. They specify it should be a 301 Permanent Redirect (R=301), the URL should not be escaped (NE), it should not be case sensitive (NC) and it is the last rule that needs to be processed (L).

Why don't I use the shorter Redirect command

There is a lot simpler Redirect command that can do redirects in one line. e.g.

Redirect 301 /testsource.html /testdestination.html?a=b

The main reason I don't use it is because my tool is designed to do exact URL redirecting. The Redirect command does not consider incoming query strings which means an exact source match can't be done. e.g. the above command will also match /testsource.html?parameter=value

Another limitation is that you can't restrict the source to a specific domain. However you can specify the domain of the destination, and specify a query string (any source query string is always ignored and lost).

What is the Firefox to KeePass Importer?

It's a free way to import passwords exported from a Firefox Web Browser into KeePass . It should also work with Thunderbird , Flock and Songbird !

Who would use it?

For people who have just started using KeePass and have passwords stored in Firefox , this free plugin can save hours in entering passwords.

What are the requirements?

A Windows PC With XP, Vista or Windows 7 should work just fine.

This Firefox to KeePass Importer is written and compiled in .Net 4.0 and therefore required Windows XP or later, and the .Net 4.0 Framework installed (Standard in Windows 7). The version for KeePass 1.x also requires the XML Import plugin to be installed.

How do I use it?

INSTALLATION

Download the latest version. (Firefox-KeePass-Importer-2-19.zip)
Un-zip and place the contained files and folders into the KeePass Program Folder
e.g. at C:\Program Files\KeePass Password Safe\ .

XML Import plugin (for KeePass 1.x)

If you're using KeePass 1.x then you will also need to install the KeePass XML Import plugin . This is not needed for KeePass 2.x users:

Download the KeePass XML Import plugin. Make sure it is the same version as your KeePass.
Install it by placing it in the KeePass Program Folder.
Restart KeePass so it picks up the plugin.
Select Tools-->Plugins
Enable the plugin by right clicking on it and selecting enable.
Restart KeePass so the plugin can initialise itself.

Note: For the portable version copy the KeePass XML Import plugin to your thumb drive. i.e. m:\PortableApps\KeePassPortable\App\keepass

IMPORTING TO KEEPASS 2.X

Start KeePass 2 and open the database to import to
If you use the View->Always On Top option, then switch it off
Select the menu option File->Import
Select the Firefox option from the bottom of the list
Select OK
Alter any settings as required
Select Start

IMPORTING TO KEEPASS 1.X

Make sure you have installed the XML Import plugin (see installation section related to the XML Import plugin)
Start the WebSiteAdvantageKeePassFirefoxConverter.exe program that should be in your KeePass Program Folder
Alter settings as required
Click Start
Select the destination file to save the passwords to (e.g., "KP-IN.XML")
Wait for it to complete
Close the program
Open KeePass
Make sure you have a database opened in KeePass (File->New or File->Open)
Select File->Import From->Import KeePass XML (If you don't see this option, re-read the installation section related to the XML Import plugin, If it is shaded then you need to open a database)
Select the file to be imported (as prepared just before, e.g., "KP-IN.XML")
Follow the instructions

Then it is recommended you remove/shred/destroy/wipe any Firefox or KeePass xml files produced! (e.g. using FileShredder )

Trouble Shooting

Upgrades early in 2012 seem to have caused a lot of problems for people. Here are some possible ways to fix them. If a solution works, to help me and others out please post a quick message in the comment section at the end.

Importing via Justin Scott's Password Exporter Extension

Previous versions imported passwords through the output from this Firefox Password Exporter Extension. This version still supports it as an option.

The Password Exporter Extension has several issues with Firefox compatibility and the handling of foreign characters which is why I developed an alternate way to acquire the Firefox passwords. However, if you cant get the direct importing to work you might find switching to use this method may solve your problems.

Install Justin Scott's Password Exporter Extension into Firefox.
Restart Firefox
In Firefox go to Tools->Options and select the Security Tab
Click Import/Export Passwords
Click Export
Follow the instructions to save the passwords to an XML file, e.g., "FF-OUT.XML" (Remember where it is for later use)
Follow the appropriate Importing instructions...
For 2.x use the Firefox XML importer
For 1.x select the option to use this extensions output

Note: For other applications such as Thunderbird the process of installing and using the Exporter may vary. More information may be found on the Password Exporter website.

Google Places provides you a free and fast way to perform well in local searches.

Google will include a map at the top of its search results if it decides that the search is relevant to local results. This is often due to a place name being included in the search phrase, but can also be due to certain keywords being present, like "pizza delivery".

Below is an example where this website jumps to a prominent position in the search results due to it being correctly registered with Google Places:

Google integrates Places entries in different ways depending on the search being made. Up to 7 entries are included, sometimes with logos and sometimes they include a single entry beside a large map. This is called the Authoritive OneBox and is a great bonus.

Registering with Google Places can get your website to appear in these top results, even when your website is not competitive enough to show up in the normal organic results.

Registered local businesses will also appear in Google Maps and the Google Earth application.

Local search is becoming more and more common as smart mobile phones become more common. Being on Google Maps puts you in front of those mobile phone users as they search for a business close to them.

How do I register?

You can ensure your business is on the map and contains accurate information in Google by signing up to Google Places and registering your local business.

Make sure you follow their quality guidelines when entering your information.

Some Tips

Your business may already be registered. If so, claim it and enhance it.

If you have multiple offices, you can register each of their locations. However, the guidelines are against you using P.O. Boxes.

Make sure you include as much content as possible. Especially the description and categories. All this text goes towards your relevance to peoples searches.

Use all your categories and try and include ones that match your identified keywords.

If you try and confirm by phone, make sure someone's ready, it's a computer voice and only states the pin number twice before hanging up! The easiest way is to provide a mobile contact number, then confirm via a text/SMS message.

If you are confirming your business via the postcard, make sure whoever checks the mail is aware of this. It can be easily be mistaken as junk mail.

The first image you add will be the one used to promote your business (most of the time!). The system has a tendency to resize, crop and distort images so you may have to play around a bit. From my experimentations, I get the best results with a 220x220 image, were the top 150 pixels will get displayed in lists and the full 220 pixels in the places page and the bubbles. When changing images give the system some time to catch up as it often displays broken images or place holders for a while.

The use of certain words in your listing can get your entry de-activated and flagged for review. When this happens, try removing words you suspect to see if your account re-activates. Or even start from a very simple listing and add content till you find what is causing the flagging.

Avoid trying to trick the system. e.g. adding two places entries for your business. This can easily get your listing put under review.

Post items in your entry. You can do this once a month. It gives you an extra sentence to work with that can be a good call to action.

Add coupons, these can show up with your entry and make it stand out more.

Encourage people to write legitimate reviews, then find my business on Google Places and write a great review about this website ;-)

Quickly build your Zeus Server Script file

If your website is powered by a Zeus server then you may have found out that you can't handle redirects in the way that most people do (.htaccess). On Zeus Servers you need to create a rewrite.script file and use a different syntax to define the redirects. This tool will help you do that.

If you upgrade your website you will most likely have changed the path to the pages it contains. 301 Redirects are the best way to tell search engines and browsers that your pages have moved. This tool lets you enter the old and new pages which it converts into a Zeus Script that will perform the 301 Redirects you require.

Not using Zeus?
Then check out my article on how to do 301 redirects, which covers examples for other servers and languages.

Enter a comma or tab separated lists of old to new pages then click the generate button. Copy the resulting code into your rewrite.script file then see if the pages are redirecting as expected.

What is it doing?

Here's an overview on what it does

If you specified a domain for the old page then this code will wrap the rest of the code. It checks that the old pages domain exactly matches the requesting domain (Host). The domain is written using Regular Expression (Regex) syntax.

insensitive match IN:Host into $ with ^domain\.com$

insensitive indicates the Regex match should be case insensitive. IN: refers to HTTP Header variables from the Request.

Then this code checks that the path part of the page matches the request.

Some Regex Basics

^	The start of a string
$	The end of a string
\.	Dots need escaping with a slash as they have a meaning (any character)
\+	Plus needs escaping with a slash as it means "one or more" of the previous character
*(.)**	This indicates capture () zero or more characters .*

If you specified just a path for the destination page then the next lines are used. The fist line stores the host name in %1, and the second line sets the destination to the new page.

match IN:Host into % with ^(.*)$

        set OUT:Location = http://%1/about-us/

OUT: refers to HTTP Header variables in the Response. 301 Redirects require that the Location variable is set to the URL of the new page.

If a full URL was specified for the new page then the code is simpler.

set OUT:Location = http://domain.com/about-us/

Finally settings are made to say it's an HTML page, we want a 301 Permanent Redirect, the response will contain the text "Moved" and this is the last command to execute.

set OUT:Content-Type = text/html

        set RESPONSE = 301

        set BODY = Moved

The 404 Test - Are you handling missing pages correctly?

"HTTP Error 404 - File Not Found!"

It often happens. Someone gets a URL wrong or a file is removed and it ends up people are sent to pages that don't exist.

Many website developers overlook or incorrectly implement the process of handling this problem. Resulting in a poor experience for the visitor and the confusion of search engines.

A good way to handle these situations is to provide a friendly message to the visitor while also sending a signal to search engines telling them to not send anyone to that page anymore.

You may have seen or heard of the HTTP Error 404 - File Not Found!. This is the standard message you may see when you visit a page or file that is missing. It is called an HTTP 404 Error because 404 is the HTTP status code the page should return to tell browsers or search engines that the requested URL refers to a web page or file that does not exist. A valid page or file should return a 200 status code.

Returning the correct code is important so Search Engines can make properly informed decisions. If your website does not return the 404 Error Code at the right times then Search Engines have no way to know if they are indexing valid content. This could result in lowering the quality of the data a Search Engine has on your website.

This tool checks if your website is returning the right HTTP 404 Error code when attempts are made to access pages that don't exits.

Returning a 404 code is not always the best solution. Savvy webmasters will utilise resources like Google Webmaster Tools to find out what is causing the traffic to those broken links and then they will use 301 Redirects to fix them. If you're the website owner then it's in your best interest to get this done, so ask your Webmaster to check and fix those 404 Errors.

The tool will help you find and get rid of those invalid URLs or missing (404) pages. It also provides data to help you check the SEO status and the validity of your HTML. That's for your whole website in one go. And it's FREE!

It flags any broken links for your attention, indicating why a link is broken and what pages referenced it. It checks pages, include files, external links and images.

But that not it. It's also useful for Search Engine Optimisation because it examines each page found. The page data returned including sizes, titles, meta tags, link references, link text and even html validation issues via Html Tidy!

The software works on Microsoft Windows and is distributed under a Freeware licence. So its FREE!

The site link checker starts at a specified web page and checks it is valid. It then searches the pages html content and finds all the links it contains to other web pages and files. The process is repeated for each of the new web pages found. This is much in the same way Google and other search engines index websites. These sort of program is commonly called a robot (bot), crawler or spider.

This is still a beta release so please make comments and suggestions to help me develop it in the right direction.

Several days later, almost every page is dog eared and full of scribbled notes. I finished it quick time, and am ready to go through it again. I will have to keep going back to it again and again so I can soak up more of the information it distils!

The cover states it as "The Revolutionary Formula for Creating Killer Copy That Grabs Their Attention and Compels Them to Buy". To wit, The book contains over 300 pages packed with copy writing advice specifically to sell products online. The sort of copy me and my clients (small businesses) need.

I believe beginners (like me) are pushed in the right direction by this book. After reading it we should have a style of copy which is far more focused on encouraging visitors to become customers. The professional copywriter will be able to grasp the more advanced concepts it details, like the "Trifecta Neuro-Affective Principal" . One day I will use that in a conversation!

My biggest problem is that there is too much information to take in! That is why, as I write more copy, I will be periodically going back through it to refine my skills.

Being nice to others can help your business

I was chatting with the owner of a business the other day and I raised the subject of him using coupons or offers on his website. His response, "the only thing we can afford to offer is free hugs!". Jokes like that often start a chain reaction in my brain, which in this case has resulted in me writing this article.

I started thinking of the free hug in a broader concept. It's being nice to someone, without asking for anything in return. Then I realised I was already practicing "free hugs" as part of my business model.

I enjoy my work, and enjoy helping people out. I'd almost say that it's more important than making money (almost!). When I started this business I made a conscious decision that I would "give away the secrets". That is, I show people how to do what I do, so they can help themselves. I probably loose some business this way, but I'm happier and I hope those people I helped are also happier. In the long run I think I will get more business out of it through word of mouth from those people I am helping.

And this is a way I'm giving "free hugs", through free advice.

Then I realised I was also giving "free hugs" in many other ways, in an internet way.

I participate in many online forums, answering questions related to SEO and website development. It's a great feeling when someone says thanks!

I also tell people about businesses that I think are great (and sometimes ones that are not). Through comments, reviews, social bookmarking and of course liking them on Facebook. Each post I make is like giving them a free hug.

So why am I telling you this? Because I want to encourage more people to give internet "free hugs".

Get into social bookmarking and list your favourite websites.
Click on those like/share/buzz buttons when you've read a great article.

Correctly target your online market

Knowing your market can give you a strong competitive advantage.

KeyWord research is about finding out what people are looking for on the internet. Using that knowledge, you can find market areas that you can compete in (niches) and then target them. It is a core part of the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) process.

Find the popular search phrases

There are several tools out there to help you find you what people are searching for. One of the most popular ones is Google's AdWords Keyword Tool (External) .

The first thing you have to do is fill in a captcha. This is to stop people like me automating a system to gather their data.

Once you have access you should first make sure it is set to the right location and language. In my case I have it set to Australia and English.

To start your analysis, I would recommend that you enter your websites URL in the website box then click search. The tool will then analyse your website and return a list of suggested keywords related to it.

Sorting by search volumes can help you determine which keywords are most popular.

At this point I would start noting down the data. A spreadsheet would be a good place to store it. The tool provides a download option which can help speed up the process.

Hopefully your own market knowledge or the results will inspire more word or phrase ideas. Enter those ideas into the Word or phrase box and perform more searches. Each time, the AdWords Keyword Suggestion Tool will provide you with more keyword ideas. I often end up with analysing 1,000s of phrases in this way!

Determine keyword conversion rate

Not all keywords are equal. Some may be more relevant to your business and therefore be far more effective than broad or irrelevant phrases. Some keywords are very good at causing sales while others attract tire kickers.

You should devise a system to rate all of your keywords. I personally use a score out of 10 based on the relative chances that a phrase will result on one of my goals being achieved. This is often called the conversion rate.

You can get an extra clue from the competition column. This is Advertising competition taken from AdWords. It's generally considered that the most competitive phrases are the ones that tend to make the most profits and therefore have good conversion rates.

At this point you should see some keywords stand out. High Search Volumes and High Relevance indicate good keywords, but there's more...

Find out how much competition there is

Targeting a great keyword is no use if you don't have a cat in hells chance against all the other websites that are also targeting it.

So you need to determine how competitive a keyword or phrase is when it comes to websites competing to show up in Google's Search Results.

The simplest way to do this is to perform the search yourself. At the top of the search results, Google provides you with number indicating how many results it found. This is a clue on how many websites are competing for that search phrase and therefore how competitive it is.

Find out how competitive you are

It is important to understand how competitive your website is. This will help you decide if you are going to fight it out for the richer but more competitive keywords or target the niche keywords which have less competition and still get some traffic.

A simple way to rate your competitiveness is by using Google's Toolbar PageRank for your website. To find out your PageRank you can use our PageRank Checker Tool .

Putting it all together

So now we should have a list of keywords (search phrases) and the following data about them:

Global & Local Monthly Searches
Advertising Competition Levels
Conversion Rates
Search Competition Page Counts
Your Toolbar PageRank

So how do we determine the best phrases to use?

There are several formulas around. The most popular one is called the KEI formula. I have done some work on extending the KEI formula and came up with this:

The idea is that Frequently Searched for and Relevant Phrases that have Low Competition levels will get good scores. Phrases that you should be able to target and get a piece of the traffic that they generate. As your website gets more competitive, then it will adjust its recommendations to those more competitive phrases.

Hopefully this process has ended up with you having a far stronger understanding of the words and phrases people use when searching for things related to your market area.

When Google is deciding which website pages to show in its search results, one of the major factor is that the chosen pages use the same words as the search phrase entered. dmoz Open Directory Submission Checker - Are you there yet?

DMOZ or the "Open Directory Project" is one of the largest and most respected human edited website directories. It is used to power Google's own directory! This makes it an important directory to try and get your website listed in, however it can be very hard and time consuming to do so.

To submit a website, use their suggest URL page. Follow the instructions carefully as it is easy to get rejected. Once you have submitted your website, don't keep doing it as each new submission pushes you to the back of the queue, and increases the delay. Most submissions take months before they are reviewed and show up!

As it can take a long time to get accepted by DMOZ I wrote this tool to saves you time by making it easy to check if you have been added yet.

Keyword Analysis - Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI) Re-Visited

KEI Re-Visited

KEI is one of the most popular formulas used for keyword analysis. Here I re-examine and hopefully enhance the original.

Just as a disclaimer. I don't believe this sort of formula should be used religiously. They are just tools to sort data in a way that helps in keyword analysis.

The Basic KEI Formula

Here is the most common version of the formula. In my case I use the Google Keyword Tool to acquire Monthly Global Searches (Searches) and Google's search engine to determine the number of Competition Pages (CompetitionPages).

The larger the KEI the more effective the Keyword should be in generating traffic. The basics of the formula are that the more searches there are the better. The less competition there is the better.

I analysed over 7,000 search phrases to see how the Searches/CompetitionPages relationship worked. The following graph shows all the results.

Colour coding has been added to show how the KEI formula distributes itself over the results. Red indicates the top 10% of the KEI values, green indicates the top 50% and blue the rest. The graph on the right is a zoomed in view of the core part of the graph on the left.

From this I noticed that the standard formula tends to spread very quickly to the right hand side, thus promoting very competitive phrases quite quickly.

Of interest. You can see horizontal lines of Search Scores, showing how the Google Keyword Tool has a limited set of values it returns.

Taking into Account the power of a website

Not all websites are equal. Some have more authority and can compete for phrases more than other. I believe the formula should adjust itself so that weaker websites focus more on low competition phrases while strong websites target high search volumes.

I decided to do this based on a websites PageRank. Here is the formula I came up with:

The constants were chosen so that a PR6 website would be equal to the standard KEI formula. As rank dropped, the relative effect of competition increases. I decided to make the PR0 website cut of its top 10% phrases around half a million pages. The following graph shows the new formula related to a PR0 website.

You will notice that the top KEI results are confined a lot more to the low competition area, confirming that this formula will promote low competition phrases more than the PR6 version.

Phrase relevance and Conversion potential

Some phrases analysed my be less relevant to the target market. Other phrases may have a great conversion rate. I believe the formula should take this into account.

I've indicated it here as a simple multiplier. I personally give all my phrases a score out of ten. I then square the score to get my ConversionRate.

Making it Manageable (Work in Progress)

The KEI formula results vary from the very large to the very small. Some people have added a simple multiplier to make the numbers look more manageable.

I've decided to play with using Logs. This has pulled all my results into the region of +10 to -10

As I mainly use the formula for phrase sorting, the application of the log has no real effect. I need to think more about its effect on the general scoring. I'm also thinking about the KER formula and the way it controls scaling via logs.

I had to add the +1s to stop errors. I have already noticed that this can cause issues for very low counts. It's better to use something like 0.00000001!

Competition Page Count Frequency

To try and understand the data distribution a bit more I graphed the frequency that particular competition page counts occurred.

Interestingly it closely matched the equation shown.

I could not find any clear pattern for search counts.

So what are the big guns!

Those two highly searched for dots up the top are "hotels" and "hotel". The most competitive phrase is "web site"!

PubSubHubbub - Real-time RSS and Atom Feeds for your Blog

What is all the Hubbub?

Making Web Feeds and Blogs Real-time

Real-time results are become more and more expected on the world wide web. Twitter was one of the first and now many systems are updating their content as things happens.

Facebook updates your wall as your friends make changes and the search engines are now including live updates in their search results.

This has left your typical blogger behind the times.

Feed Readers

Bloggers use a web feed to inform people and systems about their new blog. The most common format of feeds are RSS and Atom. These are formatted files which contain information about the most recent blogs, including their URL, date, title and contents.

A Blogger would place a Feed file on their website and provide links to it, like my RSS Feed . This lets visitors subscribe to the feed via their favourite Feed Reader. That is, receive updates when new blogs are posted.

These Feed Readers typically use a "Pull" or "Polling" type mechanism. Every so often they will re-request the Feed file, check it for new entries and inform their users if there are any.

This has two main drawbacks:

The first is efficiency. The Reader has to periodically request the whole Feed file and process it. Some readers do this every 30 minutes. This adds a strain to both the Feed provider and the Feed Reader.

The second is that it is slow. Some Readers may take several days to get round to re-checking a feed. Not anywhere near real-time.

Pinging

The next improvement was that Feed Readers would let the blog owner send a "Ping" to them, indicate that their RSS feed has been updated. This means the Reader should re-request the RSS files faster and can cut down on polling the feed. There are even website you can use to ping multiple readers at the same time.

One of the weaknesses if this approach is that the blog owner has to know all the Feed Readers that are listening to their feed. Not an easy task, so many Readers may be left out of the loop.

PubSubHubbub

Enter PubSubHubbub with its strange name. It aims to solve all these issues so that bloggers can get their real-time feeds.

The basic idea is that Feed Readers can subscribe to a feed via a "Hub", which will then inform them when there are changes to the feed.

A PubSubHubbub supporting Feed file contains data indicating where the Hub is that manages subscriptions for the feed. The Feed Reader can then go to that Hub and subscribe to automatically receive updates. After that, the Reader can just sit and wait. No more inefficient requests

So that explains the Subscriber and Hub parts of PubSubHubbub.

Publishing

Now, when a blogger updates their blog and feed, all they have to do is ping the Hub. The Hub will then go to each subscriber and inform them of the new entries. This is called Publishing and hence the Pub in the name.

There are several ways to publish. The simplest is similar to pinging where the Reader still has to request the latest feed file once its been told. However, there is a more advanced method where the Hub actually sends the new blogs (Feed items) to the Subscribers. Thus achieving efficient real-time updates.

Open Protocol

PubSubHubbub is based on an Open Protocol. This has some great benefits.

It supports RSS and Atom formatted feeds making it easier for bloggers to integrate it into their existing feed system.

Many Feed Readers are signing up to the subscription system, including the big players.

As the Hub is not centrally controlled, you can create your own (I have), and I can imagine some websites will be appearing soon to provide Hub services for you.

The Protocol includes defined security measures to protect both the Hub and Subscribers from malicious attack.
